Hideshi Tamenori is a seven-time world champion and generally considered as the greatest Othello player of all time.

Tamenori's dominance in the game of Othello spanned over three different decades from his first world title in 1986 to his last in 2006. At his peak in the late 1980s, when he was still in his early twenties, Tamenori was almost invincible, winning the two major Japanese titles (All-Japan and Meijin) three years in a row from 1988 to 1990 (which is still a record) and winning three world titles in a row in that same period (also still a record).

At the 1990 WOC in Stockholm, Tamenori won the tournament undefeated, the first of only two players to do this in the "modern era", since the 13 round format was introduced (the other one being Kento Urano at the 2022 WOC in Paris).

Tamenori is a 9 dan player, the highest rank in Japan, and was the first player to achieve this.
