Makoto Suekuni is a two-time world Othello champion winning the WOC in 1997 and 2014.

Brian Rose described Makoto as the "Tiger Woods of Othello" as he won all the major titles in a very short amount of time. In 1991 Makoto won his first national title, winning the "Elementary school division" of the All-Japan championships. In 1993, at age 15, Makoto became the youngest winner of the prestigious Meijin title, one of Japan's major tournaments. Back in those days the Meijin was not a WOC-qualifying tournament and Makoto had to wait another four years to qualify for a WOC after winning the open division of the 1997 All-Japan championships. 

Makoto won the 1997 WOC in Athens with a very solid performance, losing only two games in the preliminary 13 rounds and then won both the semi-finals against Marc Tastet and the finals against Graham Brightwell both in two straight games.

Over the next 16 years, Makoto won many more titles and reached the WOC final several times, but it wasn't until the 2014 WOC in Bangkok that he would win his second world title winning the final over three games against his long time rival Ben Seeley.
