Hidenori Maruoka is a 2-time world Othello champion, winning his first world title in 1978 in New York and again in 1981 in Brussels.
Maruoka won the All-Japan championship's "Open division" in 1978 when he was just 16 years old. This victory earned him the right to represent Japan at the second World Othello Championship held in New York. At the WOC Maruoka won every game by a large margin and defeated the US champion Carol Jacobs in the finals in two straight games (14-50, 64-0). Hidenori Maruoka is the second world Othello champion (after Hiroshi Inoue) and the first "teenage world champion".
Maruoka won the All-Japan championship again in 1981 and went on to win his second world title in Brussels, defeating Brian Rose in the one game final (it was actually a playoff game as no finals were planned at that WOC).
In 1982 Maruoka won the Meijin Challenger tournament but then lost the Meijin match against the title holder Suetsugu Kawamura.
