FacebookThe Belgian Othello Association is an active mind sports organisation that has been promoting Othello for several years. Our game is known for its motto: “A minute to learn, a lifetime to master.” We work to popularise Othello by organising tournaments that are accessible to players of all levels and by maintaining an active presence on various social media platforms. Whenever possible, we also participate in conventions and workshops to introduce the game to a wider audience.
In Belgium, we have around 90 active tournament players, with several times more players active online. Each year, six to ten tournaments are organised across the country. Typically, one to two tournaments takes place in the French-speaking region, while the others are held in Flanders. Every year, we organise several tournaments specifically aimed at beginners and less experienced players. In addition, Belgium hosted a series of internationals events, like the European Grand tournaments (24 editions since 1991) and the 3rd European Championship in 2024.
Currently, there are no active local Othello clubs in Belgium; all activities are organised centrally. Of course, it is possible for players to meet and play outside official tournaments, but this does not happen on a regular basis.
A Belgian Championship is organised every year, with 2025 marking the 42nd edition, whereas the first edition was in 1978. Through the Belgian Championship and the Belgian Grand Prix, players can qualify for the World Othello Championship. Belgium has hosted the World Championship three times: in 1981, 2009, and 2017.
